Taboo
Every culture has them, without exception, and it doesn't stop there. Taboos change as they span sub-cultures, geographic regions, organizations and groups. Even single individuals may hold a complex and evolving set of taboos observed by no one else. At whatever level, they almost always include restrictions or prohibitions on behavior, either directly or indirectly. History is ripe with evolutionary moments spawned by those brave souls who've dared to challenged this common opinion. No shortage of those rewarded with summary death, as well. Although considered the realm of the metaphysical, many taboos are more pragmatic in origin . The conventions against mixing certain foods, or how they are stored, for instance some of Kosher law, is considered to have been born of the need to protect from unwittingly self poisoning. As is the widely held taboo of incest and inter-family marriage, which protects human genetics. The odd thing is that royals, who intermarry to maintain power and the dynastic bloodline, often ignore this restriction. Another common religious taboo is a strong judgment against masturbation, which is traced to an idea that life force is being spilled and wasted (not used to pro-create). Some taboos, like marrying outside the family religion, serve purely political or economic function. Others are specific to cultural stories, like the Zulu, who believe having sex in daylight reduces the human soul to the level of a dog.

| What are your own personal stopping places? Almost everyone has had sexual experiences with others, which resulted in a sexual imprint, a taboo, around a body part, or a particular type of experience. Do you have one area in your body whose physical expression you never, ever express? This is an opportunity to grow beyond what you know. Anal sex is a taboo for many, and although it’s not for everyone, many people are surprised that something so pleasurable could have such a bad rap. Make sure that any rules you operate by are really your own, and that they reflect how you feel today, with this partner, not some ghost interaction with the past. |
