Gay
The most common contemporary use of the word implies same-gender love or sex. Prior
to the 1970s the word 'gay' meant 'happy and carefree'.
Since then, the word has been embraced by mainstream society to identify
homosexual men and women, the most common vernacular is applied to man-to-man relationships. Alfred C. Kinsey shocked the world in 1948 with his study that
indicated 10 men in 100 were gay, and even more shocking (at the time) was
that 37% of American men reported having a sexual experience with another
male that resulted in orgasm. Although his studies are the subject of much scrutiny, neither the Greeks nor the Romans would
have found this data worth noting, since homosexual love was a fully
integrated part of daily life. Recent genetic studies conclude that indeed,
there is a genetic pre-disposition for taking the powerful male/male
bond that often exists between soldiers, statesman, mentors and friends, and
delving into the realm of physical, sexual expression.
