Condom
A condom is a close-fitting sheath that covers the erect penis, worn during intercourse or fellatio. Men have donned “overcoats” for thousands of years, not to prevent pregnancy but rather to protect from venereal disease. For most of recorded history (first recorded use was by the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt), men and their partners have made due with animal intestines, fish membranes or oiled fabric covers. In the 1930's latex condoms improved upon rubbers, which were first introduced in the 1870's. Today polyurethane condoms are whisper-thin at only 40 microns thick! As for preventing pregnancy, condoms are not very effective unless they are used perfectly and/or with another type of barrier method (diaphragm, cervical cap, spermicide) and before intercourse commences. Average use of condoms alone (which is somewhat careless) results in 16 pregnancies per 100 couplings.

| The most likely origin of "condom" is its namesake Dr. (and British Earl of) Condom, who perfected a sensitized version of a penis sheath to protect the royal member of King Charles II from venereal disease during his licentious romps with prostitutes. With the specter of HIV infection, the use of a latex condom (NOT lambskin) is the number one precaution a person can take to protect themselves from disease during sex. Incorporate condoms into your foreplay by experimenting with your lover (or yourself). Try placing a condom on the head of your lover's penis and rolling it down with your lips and tongue. A drop of lube in the tip before rolling on will feel sexier for some men. Whatever you do, become an expert at safe-condom play, and remember. No glove, no love! |
