Dating
Dating is a modern version of the old notion of courtship, in which two people set aside time to get to know each other. What sets dating apart from other shared pastimes is the hovering intention of a kiss, a lingering touch, even the possibility of genuine passion exchanged. Dating is an audition for a romantic partner, each person hoping to end up as the starry-eyed lead in the other's love story. Common first dates include some combination of mutual distraction (a movie, bowling, the art museum), followed by close focus on each other (a meal, a cocktail, cocoa by the fire). Dates are successful when they slide into privacy and are deemed a bust if either party avoids being alone with the other. Synonyms: Court, Escort, Go Out, Go Steady, Woo

| If you find yourself without a partner, watching television (or surfing the net) night after night, get thee a date! The old-fashioned way of meeting your true love at work, a reunion or the grocery store down the street is always possible. You can also check out the new singles clubs, which offer everything from backpacking to black tie events. Once there, at least you'll know in advance that every single person in attendance is single AND they're into something that you're into. A good start, at least. On-line dating gives you everything from basic data profiles, to sexual preferences, spiritual practices and the number of kids living at home. Best of all, with e-mailed pictures you have a good shot at feeling out the potential for physical attraction (which really is the point of dating). Once the date occurs, it's up to the two of you to realize whether you've found true love or a friend to hang out with. Even in a single exchange, you'll have an opportunity to see yourself in a whole new light. |
